THE THIRD GROUP OF PATICIPANTS OF TOMORROW’S LAWYER PROGRAM STARTS TRAINING SESSION

On 18 — 20 March 2017 the third group of participants of Tomorrow’s Lawyer program (hereinafter – the “Program”) completed their first training module dedicated to the communication with the client.

The attorneys attending the program were trained by Mrs. Iryna Glushnkova, a professional coach, and a Program expert Mr. Dmytro Kukhnyuk with the participation of Mrs. Julia Lisova.

Traditionally, the welcoming remarks were addressed by the President of the Ukrainian Bar Association Mr. Denys Bugay and the Program Manager Mr. Andriy Vyshnevskiy. The training was also attended by the manager of the Ukrainian-Canadian Project “Affordable and High Quality Legal Assistance in Ukraine” Mrs. Oksana Kikot and the Project’s team leader Mrs. Ivanna Ibragimova, Director of the “Bar Association of Legal Aid Providers” Mrs. Victoria Mitko and Hromadske Radio presenter, writer, human rights activist, advocate Mrs. Larysa Denysenko.

Despite the strong personality of every participant, varying specializations and different levels of involvement in legal aid providing, the advocates felt the benefits of working in a team of like-minded professionals. Lawyers left behind their social statuses and regalia and gladly plunged into a creative and friendly atmosphere of the three-days training.

In their coments the lawyers atated that “they reframed their views on communication process with clients, especially from the vulnerable groups”. “We’ve obtained answers to the most complicated  questions that arise in the profession”. “The training helped us to look at ourselves from the outside and understand in which direction we should move on to improve our skills”. And even today the lawyers have an opportunity            to effectively apply all the knowledge and skills to build effective communication, moderate emotions and sustain resilience, and most importantly –  to understand a client, establish trustworthy relationships and provide a high-quality legal assistance.

The insghts discovered during the first module brought an important impetus to the professional development. The information and knowledge were aggregated and systematized. “We wish to become agents of change, bring the knowledge to the legal community, share with colleagues”, – noted the participants.

The “Tomorrow’s Lawyer” Program is being implemented by the Ukrainian Bar Association (UBA) and the Bar Association of Legal Aid Providers (BALAP) supported by the “Quality and Accessible Legal Aid in Ukraine” (QALA) Project funded by the Government of Canada, implemented by the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in cooperation with the Coordination Centre for Legal Aid Provision.

“Tomorrow’s Lawyer” Program — the first All-Ukrainian professional development program for lawyers, intended to form a strong and active community of lawyers who are expected to become the agents of change with high ethical standards of work; introduce reforms, both at the regional and national levels; improve standards of legal aid providing and facilitate the effective implementation of self-government functions.

The Program consists of four training modules, covering the most important aspects of legal practice, namely attorney-client relations, building collateral relations in the justice system, communication within the legal society, public relations and media.
