The Road to Justice: Thorns of Morality? – Seminar for Tomorrow’s Lawyers

Do you reflect upon philosophical issues in the context of law? How often do you ask yourself: “Is philosophy of law important for a practicing lawyer?”, “Is justice possible in the 21st century?”, “What is the difference between civil and natural law?”

On July 25-27, 2019 the “Tomorrow’s Lawyer” Program with the support of US Embassy in Ukraine, held the most anticipated and one of the key inter-module events this season – a seminar on philosophy entitled “The Road to Justice: Thorns of Morality?”.

As much as 23 attorneys – participants and graduates of three seasons of the Program, selected via questionnaires – took part in the seminar. In total, the Program received 63 questionnaires from participants!

During the seminar, the following topics were discussed:

  • Rights and ideas of justice;
  • Authorities and bodies;
  • Legal analysis of the trial of Christ
  • Concept of justice

Among the experts of the seminar were Ukrainian historians of philosophy:

Andrii Baumeister:

Doctor of Philosophy, Professor, Department of Theoretical and Practical Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy, Kyiv National University after Taras Shevchenko

Svitlana Matvienko:

Chair of the Council of Legislative Initiatives Laboratory, curator of the Ukrainian School of Political Studies

Mykhailo Koltsov:

Candidate of Philosophy, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Lecturer at USPS.

The Philosophy of Law Seminar was first held during the second season of the Program back in 2018. The participants of the 2019 seminar were lucky, as the training experts expanded the seminar and transformed it into a three-day program, and the agenda itself was improved and expanded.

“Tomorrow’s Lawyer” is a powerful network of lawyers uniting opinion leaders in the legal profession, who provide legal assistance in accordance with the highest ethical standards, act as agents of change in society and leaders in the professional community.

The “Tomorrow’s Lawyer” Program was launched in 2016 and first implemented within the “Quality and Accessible Legal Aid” Project, carried out by the Canadian Bureau for International Education with the support of the Government of Canada in cooperation with the Legal Aid Coordination Centre. It is currently being implemented and developed with the support of the US Embassy’s Law Enforcement Section in Ukraine, the “Tomorrow’s Lawyer” NGO, in partnership with the Ukrainian Bar Association and the Bar Association of Legal Aid Providers.
